Pumpkin Tea Cosy Pattern!

Ok, we promised some free patterns so here is the first one!  We’re well into October now, it’s feeling pretty autumnal and halloween is approaching fast!  So what better way to embrace it than knit yourself a lovely pumpkin tea cosy?

This cosy knits up in an evening or two, depending on your speed, and will look great as a seasonal halloween kitchen table feature! Now its finished, we’re celebrating with a lovely warming pot of Rooibos :-)

This cosy was designed by Faye at buttonsandbeeswax for a 6 cup tea pot, and the pattern is as follows:

Materials

1 x 50g ball Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK  in 18023 (or similar DK yarn
a small amount of brown DK yarn
a small amount of toy stuffing
4mm needles
1 sewing needle

Cosy (make 2)

Abbreviations

CO – Cast on
sts – stitches
k – knit
p – purl
k2 tog – knit two stitches together
p2 tog – purl two stitches together
skpo – slip first stitch onto right needle, knit next stitch, past slipped stitch over second stitch and off needle.

Using 4mm needles and DK yarn, Cast on 48 stitches

Row 1 (K6, P2) rep to end
Row 2 (K2, P6) rep to end
Repeat the last two rows until there are 52 rows.
Row 53 (skpo, k4, p2) rep to end
Row 54 (k2, p5) rep to end
Row 55 (k3, k2 tog, p2) rep to end
Row 56 (k2, p4) rep to end
Row 57 (skpo, k2tog, p2) rep to end
Row 58 (k2, p2) rep to end
Row 59 (skpo, p2tog) rep to end

Break off yarn and pull through remaining 12 sts, weave in ends.

Make one more piece the same.

To make up –

Sew two sides of tea cosy together using mattress stitch, using the spout and handle on your teapot as a guide.  My spout and handle both needed a 3 inch tall hole starting from 1 inch above the bottom of the cosy.

Stalk

CO 24 sts.
Row 1 (k4, p4) rep to end
Row 2 (k4, p4) rep to end
Repeat last two rows until there are 6 rows.
Row 7 (skpo, k2, p4, skpo, k2, p4, k2, k2tog, p4)
Row 8 (k4, p3) rep to end
Row 9 (k3, p4) rep to end
Row 10 (k4, p3) rep to end
Row 11 (skpo, k1, p4, skpo, k1, p4, k1, k2tog, p4)
Row 12 (k4, p2) rep to end
Row 13 (k2, p4) rep to end
Row 14 (k4, p2)rep to end
Row 15 (skpo, p2 tog, skpo, p2tog, k2tog, p2 tog)

Break off yarn and pull through remaining 6 sts.

To make the stalk

Using end of yarn that you pulled through the remaining stitches, sew both sides of the stalk together using mattress stitch.  Secure, then loosely stuff the stalk with toy stuffing.

Stitch the stalk to the top of your cosy, et voilà! :-)
